This is an incredible article! I truly agree that everyone seems harp on the importance of these but not tangible practical tool to build them.

I think a way to develop self awareness is to keep a tendency journal. In it we can take notes of tendencies we have. E.g. talking too much when certain topics come up, keeping every project a secret and close to us without bringing others in. These tendencies hurt the relational dynamics and is part of understanding how to adapt behaviors that maintain the level of influence required for the team.

This is a great conversation!

Awesome article, Nicola. I like the breakdown of the different soft skills and the resource bank you associated with each.

I love the organisational skills you mentioned. They don't get mentioned very often. Adaptability and being familiar with the business needs is crucial for any software engineer to grow beyond their coding abilities to a higher level, the business level. Which is much more rewarding both in compensation, and the status within the company.

Hope you are feeling better, Nicola!

I love how you broke down into a lot of core skills. If someone wants to improve in any of them, they can create retrospectives and plan their work based on these skills as criteria.

I liked the mindset of a transition from low-level hard skills to high-level soft skills. It seems tech will become a commodity with the advances in AI tools. We'll still orchestrate the big picture, but at that high level the soft skills gain more importance.
